Understanding verification results

What each verification result means and what to do next.

When you verify a photo, in the App or at verify.timemark.com, Timemark checks three things:

  • Time & Date: whether the timestamp matches Timemark’s recorded capture data.
  • Location: whether the location matches Timemark’s recorded capture data.
  • Image Analysis: whether available checks detect editing or tampering.

All available checks passed against Timemark’s verification record.

One or more checks failed. Common scenarios:

ScenarioTime & DateLocationImage Analysis
Time wrong, no locationFailN/APass
Time and location both wrongFailFailPass
Time correct, location wrongPassFailPass
Time wrong, location correctFailPassPass
Photo edited, no locationPassN/AFail
Photo edited, time and location wrongFailFailFail
Photo edited, location wrongPassFailFail
Photo edited, time wrongFailPassFail
Photo edited onlyPassPassFail

Verification could not be completed. Common reasons:

  • No Photo Code: the photo has no side Photo Code. Only photos with a Photo Code can be verified.
  • Waiting for data upload: the photo data hasn’t fully uploaded yet. Ask the photographer to open Timemark again to complete the upload.
  • No template: the photo was taken without a Photo Template and cannot be verified.
  • Old version: the photo was taken with an older version of Timemark. The photographer should update the app.

The Photo Code was not found in Timemark’s records. Check that the code was entered correctly. If the code is entered correctly, Timemark has no record of issuing it.

To prevent tampering, Timemark disables the Photo Code when it detects any of the following at the moment of capture, so the photo gets no valid code and cannot be verified:

  • Time tampering: the device clock was manually changed or rolled back.
  • Virtual location: a mock or GPS-spoofing location was in use.
  • App signature mismatch: the app was repackaged or modified (Android).
